“How old are roads, Daddy? When was the first road made? When people walk along it makes a path, I know that“ But if the place we have to go to is too far away, will we make it there? If we meet people I don’t know and they speak a different language“ will you help me?”

„Each figure in its few steel outlines shines, stands out, defines a person. People, a group walking with the sky in the background, on a path that belongs to the special world of ideas, an ideal world, a journey into the distant past which, rather than no longer being, is still there, has always been, in a dimension suspended forever between heaven and reality. Which ultimately indicates a visit to a land made of history. Here is the road of the people, the Via Francigena, the wayfarer’s road of all time and still today.“

San Gimignano is located on the Via Francigena, an ancient road layout that around the year 1000 AD. it connected Rome to the Alpine passes and therefore to the rest of Europe. In 1990 the city was included by UNESCO in the World Heritage Lists. This work of sculpture is a symbol of responsibility towards the future: roads exist.

This work is part of a group of sculptures(*) which develop, in a singular and at the same time connected way, a fundamental theme of life. The key words of this talk are: Encounter, Dialogue, Gift, Joy, Circular dance, Passage between generations, Road, Way, Meeting of cultures

Figurengruppe auf dem Weg – Stimmen aus der Welt. San Gimignano/Bonn – 2010

„Wie alt sind die Straßen, Papa? Wann wurde die erste Straße geboren? Das Gehen macht Straßen, alle richtig…. Aber wenn der Ort, zu dem wir gehen müssen, zu weit weg ist, werden wir es dann immer schaffen? Und wenn wir Menschen treffen, die ich nicht kenne und die eine andere Sprache sprechen… wirst du mir dann helfen?

„Jede Figur in ihren wenigen stählernen Konturen leuchtet, sticht hervor, definiert eine Person. Menschen, eine Gruppe, die vor dem Hintergrund des Himmels auf einem Weg geht, der zu einer besonderen Welt der Ideen gehört, einer idealen Welt, einem Weg in die ferne Vergangenheit, die nicht mehr da ist, sondern schon immer da war, in einer Dimension, die für immer zwischen Himmel und Wirklichkeit schwebt. Das bedeutet letztlich ein Gehen in ein Land, das aus Geschichte besteht. Das ist der Weg des Volkes, die Via Francigena, der Weg des Wanderers von immer und auch heute.

San Gimignano liegt an der Via Francigena, einer antiken Straßenverbindung, die um 1000 n. Chr. Rom mit den Alpenpässen und damit mit dem übrigen Europa verband. Im Jahr 1990 wurde die Stadt in die Liste des UNESCO-Weltkulturerbes aufgenommen. Diese Skulptur ist ein Symbol für die Verantwortung gegenüber der Zukunft: Es gibt Straßen.

Das Werk ist Teil einer Gruppe von Skulpturen(*), die auf einzigartige und doch miteinander verbundene Weise ein grundlegendes Thema des Lebens entwickeln.  “Quanto sono antiche le strade papà? Quando è nata la prima strada? Camminando si fanno le strade, va bene… Ma se il posto dove dobbiamo andare è troppo lontano, ce la faremo sempre ad arrivare? E se incontriamo gente che non conosco e che parla un’altra lingua… mi aiuti tu?

„Ogni figura nei suoi pochi contorni d’acciaio riluce, si staglia, definisce una persona. Persone, gruppo in cammino con lo sfondo del cielo, su un sentiero che appartiene al mondo speciale delle idee, mondo ideale, un andare nel lontano passato che anziché non essere più c’è ancora, è sempre stato, in una dimensione sospesa per sempre tra cielo e realtà. Che in definitiva indica un andare per una terra fatta di storia. Ecco la strada delle genti, la via Francigena, la strada del viandante di sempre e ancora di oggi.“

San Gimignano si trova sulla via Francigena, un antico tracciato viario che attorno all’anno 1000 d.C. collegava Roma ai passi alpini e quindi al resto dell’Europa. Nel 1990 la città è stata inserita dall’ UNESCO nelle Liste del Patrimonio Mondiale dell’Umanità. Questa opera di scultura è un simbolo di responsabilità verso il futuro: le strade esistono.
